Printer Troubleshooting — Can't Print or Connect

Fix the most common printing problems: printer not showing up, print jobs going nowhere, stuck print queue, and Error #740.

Printer Troubleshooting — Can't Print or Connect

Most printing problems fall into one of three categories: the printer is not showing up on your computer, print jobs are sent but nothing prints, or you get an error when trying to add the printer. Work through these steps in order before submitting a workorder.

Step 1 — Check the Basics

  • Make sure the printer is turned on and shows Ready on its display panel.
  • Check that it is connected to the network — the display should show a WiFi or network icon.
  • Make sure there is paper in the tray and no paper jams (open all doors and check).

Step 2 — Clear the Print Queue

A stuck print job can block everything behind it. To clear it:

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down to Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Stop.
  3. Open File Explorer and navigate to C:WindowsSystem32spoolPRINTERS.
  4. Delete all files in that folder (do not delete the folder itself).
  5. Go back to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
  6. Try printing again.

Step 3 — Remove and Re-Add the Printer

If the printer disappears from your list or shows offline:

  1. Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
  2. Click the printer that is not working and choose Remove.
  3. Click Add device and wait for your printer to appear.
  4. If it does not appear automatically, click Add manually and enter the printer's IP address. Contact IT if you do not know the IP address.

Error #740 — "That Didn't Work"

This error means Windows needs administrator rights to install the printer driver. You cannot resolve this yourself — submit a workorder and IT will install it for you. Note the exact printer name and your room number in your ticket.

Printing from a Chromebook

Chromebooks use Google Cloud Print or CUPS printing. If a printer is not available on your Chromebook:

  1. Open Chrome and go to Settings → Advanced → Printing → Printers.
  2. Check if your printer is listed. If not, click Add Printer.
  3. If you cannot add it yourself, submit a workorder and IT will configure it.

Still Not Working?

Submit a workorder at support.nobleps.com, select Printer as the device type, and include: the printer name or location, your room number, the error message (if any), and what you have already tried.
